Thunder rumbles because sound bends and arrives piecemeal
A lightning channel can be several kilometres long. Thunder from the part nearest you arrives first; sound from the top and far end arrives later, stretched into a rumble. Refraction through air of different temperatures bends the sound further, which is why distant lightning sometimes looks silent.
