Daily fact

Thunder rumbles because sound bends and arrives piecemeal

A lightning channel can be several kilometres long. Thunder from the part nearest you arrives first; sound from the top and far end arrives later, stretched into a rumble. Refraction through air of different temperatures bends the sound further, which is why distant lightning sometimes looks silent.

No recorded weather anniversary today — a good reason to step outside and make your own observation.

Daily tip

Choose exercise time around the UV peak

UV peaks around solar noon, commonly 12:00–14:00 local clock time. Shift workouts to early morning or late afternoon, seek tree-lined routes, and wear a cap; temperature and ozone also usually peak later, making the evening doubly easier.
